Research Question
The aim of the Cereals – Intercropping to exploit rainfall for profit project (VGIP2B) is to identify novel rotation and fallow management options that can be reliably adopted within southern Australia to make more efficient use of annual rainfall patters and improve farm profits.Research Information & Objectives
The project will test practices such as companion planting, where multiple species are sown together at the same time to achieve synergistic benefits for both species. It will also identify opportunities to grow multiple crops in a single year to improve utilisation of summer rainfall either through intercropping (summer crop sown into standing winter crop) or following harvest of the winter crop. In environments where summer cropping is unlikely it will instead test novel approaches to increase summer fallow efficiency.
