Research Question

The purpose of the project is to increase the profitability and resilience of farms in Southern Australia through an increase in livestock numbers and the productivity of those animals through the extension and adoption of MLA products and programs. It aims to capitalise on the recent shift in interest from crop-intensive farmers to introduce more livestock into their farming businesses, as well as support existing livestock producers.

Research Information & Objectives

The project will:

  • Conduct a coordinated feedbase extension program to support landholders progress from awareness to increased knowledge and finally enhanced skills and confidence to adopt more profitable practices.
  • Engage producers in demonstrations of novel and proven approaches to manage pasture through selection of appropriate pasture species, enhanced soil (fertility, lime, gypsum) and grazing management and weed control to optimise feed on offer and groundcover.
  • Support producers’ trial feedbase practice changes on their own farms and in small local groups.
  • Enrol the crop advisory sector as a major new conduit for pasture and livestock related information.
  • Capture pasture and animal production data for reliable economic analysis, enabling on the demonstration site impacts on profitability to be measured.
