Uncertain Times Workshops
The initial round of our ‘Uncertain Times’ workshops was conducted last week of August, attracting approximately 60 attendees across Lismore, Hamilton, and Harrow. These workshops primarily focused on anticipated pasture growth for spring and its implications for carryover feed into summer. This project is supported by Southern Farming Systems through funding from the Australian Government’s
Future Drought Fund and Meat & Livestock Australia.
Cam Nicholson commenced the sessions by discussing what pasture cover we want left and why, emphasising current pasture conditions and predicted growth. Dale Grey then presented the seasonal forecast for South West Victoria, noting that the models remain inconclusive regarding spring and summer conditions.
Michelle McClure guided participants through the My Farm Dashboard, demonstrating the utilization of tools such as forecasts, soil moisture probes, and temperature sensors. Cam also introduced the new ‘Pasture Cover Tool’, which assists producers in estimating pasture cover at the end of summer, aiding in the decision-making process regarding stock retention or sale. For instance, if the tool indicates a pasture cover below the target of 1000 kg DM/ha, producers might consider selling stock or implementing stock containment strategies.
Cam further elaborated on the decision-making process and how to use the ‘Decision Wizard’, available on the My Farm Dashboard, to make informed decisions this spring and summer with the knowledge and tools provided during the workshop.
Additionally, Angus Brown from Mercado presented a market forecast for sheep and cattle for the upcoming months. Cattle prices are expected to be strong however store lambs are looking to be weaker. For more information – MLA Prices & Markets or the AuctionsPlus Price Discovery Tool.
The second round of workshops will be held 17-19 September with the same participants and will be recapping their learning from the first workshop and focusing on managing the feed-base and animal production for the next 6 months.
