
Perfect Pairings from the Rokewood winter walk
Early sowing, smart species pairings and pasture persistence were key themes at the recent Rokewood Winter Field Day.
Results from the MLA-funded Quick Winter Feed trial showed leafy turnip mixed with annual ryegrass produced the highest early winter feed, yielding 1,250 kg DM/ha by June 9. Forage barley followed with 1,140 kg DM/ha, while oats and annual ryegrass produced 1,135 kg DM/ha. Annual ryegrass treatments have delivered the strongest winter growth in 2025, while forage barley was the standout winter producer in 2024.
For the second year running, early autumn sowing produced the most biomass despite lower soil moisture and poorer establishment. Crops sown on March 28 outperformed those sown on May 28, reinforcing the value of early sowing where weed control is good. Forage rape, however, struggled when sown later in cooler conditions, highlighting the importance of matching species to sowing temperatures.
Discussion also centred on multi-species pasture mixes. Speakers noted that what is sown is not always what remains two years later, with perennial ryegrass and clover expected to be the most persistent species. Farmers were encouraged to clearly define their objectives, consider soil type and species compatibility, and understand how grazing and herbicide options affect long-term pasture performance.
Herbs such as plantain and chicory attracted attention as high-quality livestock feeds. Both were recommended as separate specialist paddocks rather than mixed together because of their different seasonal growth patterns and management requirements.
At the SFS “Meadows” satelite research site, researchers are investigating pasture and crop options to fill summer and autumn feed gaps for Merino weaners. Lucerne, Benetas vetch and late-maturing clovers are among the species being assessed for their ability to maintain feed quality beyond spring.
The day concluded with a reminder that boosting livestock performance relies on management as much as pasture choice. As one participant summed up: “The higher the performance expected, the more management that is required.”
