Data Crunching & Gross Margins
The SFS variety by management trials are all harvested but the work doesn’t end there. Now that the trials are harvested it’s time for the team to turn their thoughts to reporting and bringing all that data to you, our members.
The results book reports are a chance for us to bring all the assessments and data that we have collected throughout the year together and tell the story of the trial’s development, from the establishment counts at the start of the year right through to the Gross Margin analysis post-harvest.
The variety by management trials are a chance for alternate management practices to be applied to various new and emerging crop varieties, and one of the best ways to quantify our results is the gross margin for each plot at the end of the year. The opportunity to generate a gross margin for every plot allows us to statistically analyse the results giving greater depth to the data at the end of the day.
Inputs from throughout the year are recorded for our expenses; to standardize the cost of these inputs we use the Farm Gross Margin and Enterprise Planning Guide for South Australia document put out by the South Australian Grain Industry Trust.
The income for every plot is calculated based on the per hectare yield and the analysed grain qualities. This level of data allows us to get accurate grade prices for each plot in the wheat and barley trials giving further information about how the management practices affected grain qualities.
While the results book is still a little way off, you can check out the Members Only Express Results with the analysed grain yield and qualities for the variety by management trials.
